Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up, Exhibition, V&A, London: Until 4 November 2018

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

Take advantage of this remarkable opportunity to see 200 of Frida Kahlo’s personal belongings, which have never been displayed outside of Mexico and have only been accessible to the public since 2004.

This extraordinary exhibition at the V&A offers fresh insight into the compelling life story of Frida Kahlo by displaying 200 of her possessions, which have never been seen before in the UK.

On the artist’s death in 1954 her husband, Diego Rivera, ordered that her belongings be sealed in the bathroom of their home, the Blue House (Casa Azul), in Mexico City. This time capsule of items was only reopened in 2004, 50 years after the artist’s death. It is also the first time these possessions will be exhibited outside Kahlo’s native country, Mexico.

The intimate belongings on display include, clothing, jewellery, make-up, films and photographs and offer a powerful insight into how the artist built her identity, or ‘made herself up’.
