This predominantly photographic exhibition, ‘Renewal: Life After the First World War in Photographs, at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) exposes the creativity, resilience and optimism of people who were left with the destruction of the First World War and faced with massive social  change.

Renewal: Life After the First World War in Photographs at IWM, reveals the human inventiveness and endurability that was displayed during a time of great upheaval and change. The extensive collection of 130 black and white photographs, as well as documents and relics, allows you to see and understand the complexities of rebuilding identities, homes, countries and even continents, after great tragedy and destruction.

You will get to see rare photos of this often-neglected period, including photographs of refugees returning to demolished homes, the rebuilding of Ypres, and villages which ‘died for France’- never to be remade. This immersive display maps the journey from the destruction of the First World War to the initial optimism, the hardships of displacement, the fall of empires, ending in the new world that emerged.
