Boilly: Scenes of Parisian Life, Exhibition, The National Gallery, London: 28 February–19 May 2019

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

Scenes of Parisian Life, includes 20 of Boilly’s works that have never been seen before, as they have been loaned from a private British collection. Take this opportunity to see the works of this daring Parisian artist in a new light.

Boilly may not be a household name in Britain, but he is often regarded as a prominent artist of the French Revolution. The artist engaged with and documented this politically tumultuous period with daring, topical images, often embodying his wry sense of humour.

The works on display will include saucy interior scenes, (which vexed the French authorities of the day),  alongside innovative and original street scenes, as well as ingenious trompe l’oeils. If you have ever been intrigued about the artist behind ‘A Girl at a Window’, displayed at The National Gallery, then this exhibition is a must-see.
