The exhibition ‘William Blake: The Artist’ at the Tate Britain will feature over 300 of the artist’s work - from his paintings to his prints. The Tate aims to provide a fresh perspective on this famous, influential and pertinent artist’s work.

The Tate Britain will host over 300 works of William Blake, including his watercolours, paintings and prints, making ‘William Blake: The Artist’ the most comprehensive exhibition of his art since 2001. The gallery aims to reveal Blake’s influence on the Romantic period and to bring the back stories of some of the most famous pieces of British art to life. By framing his art in this way, the Tate hopes to place the visitor in Blake’s shoes and to see his art as he saw it.

William Blake, born in 1757, originally aspired to be a painter, before turning to printmaking and poetry. Some of his best-known art includes: ‘The Angels Hovering Over the Body of Christ in the Sepulchre’ (c.1805), and ‘The Ancient of Days’ (1794). Blake’s renowned self-illustrated poetry includes ‘Songs of Innocence’ and ‘Songs of Experience’ (1789). In these works Blake often embodied the political turmoil of his time by depicting the chaotic and contradictory nature of society as inevitable.

Blake has continued to inspire a wide-range of artists, musicians, poets and performers to this day. Perhaps, because of  his personal struggles in a time of oppression, as well as his vision and political commitment, has never been more relevant than it is today.
