I Was There: Room of Voices, IWM, London: 21 September 2018- 31 March 2019

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

‘I Was There: Room of Voices’ at the Imperial War Museum, features first-person accounts of the First World War Armistice, which have never been heard before. This immersive and inventive exhibition examines the transition from war to peace from 32 perspectives.

‘I Was There: Room of Voices’ is a unique opportunity to hear the stories of 32 people who fought and lived through the First World War (WW1). This is the first time many of these intimate accounts have ever been heard, as the exhibition features recordings from the IWM’s Sound Archive, which have never been displayed to the public before.

The display centres around the Armistice that ended WW1, which was signed on 11 November 1918 at 11 am. The Room of Voices allows you to explore this transition from war to peace in way that has never been done before. The differing opinions and reactions voiced in the first-person accounts provides a comprehensive and new perspective of these historical landmark events. Relive the past by letting soldiers, civilians and children guide you from the hardships to the celebrations of a moment which affected generations to come.

‘I Was There: A Room of Voices’ is only one of the innovative and immersive installations of the IWM’s Making a New World season, which examines how WW1 shaped the world we know today.
