Church of the Virgin Mary Under the Chain, Prague

While the Church of the Virgin Mary Under the Chain - located on the castle side of the Charles Bridge - is small on the inside, it boasts a grand entrance, a flowery courtyard and a rich history.

The Church of the Virgin Mary Under the Chain, also known as the Church of Our Lady Beneath the Chain, was built by the Knights Hospitaller, or the Knights of Malta, in the 12th Century. The church’s name reflects the fact that the Knights used a chain to block boats on the nearby Vltava River to ensure they paid customs duties.

These days, the church opens for mass every Tuesday at 17.30 and Sunday at 10.00. Outside of those times, visitors can see the garden courtyard, look through the barred gate into the church itself and visit the on-site handmade jewellery shop, AleAle.
