Bakancsos Market, Budapest

There are a number of popular flea markets in Budapest and while Bakancsos may not be the largest of them all it is our top pick for atmosphere.

Bakancsos Market, also often nicknamed 'Flamingo Market' is a bric-a-brac heaven with a relaxed atmosphere, for those who are content with having a casual browse over intense bargain hunting. A friendlier vibe than Ecseri Flea Market, visitors can have a wander without being engulfed in the crowd of customers or distracted by the commotion caused from hardcore haggling.

The items for sale at Bakancsos are generally not as valuable as the ones that can be found at Ecseri; the sellers at Bakancsos do not specialise in sourcing vintage and antique treasures, so it's largely up to the customer to decide what's a gem and what's junk. Nonetheless, Bakancsos sells a multitude of delightfully unnecessary miscellaneous objects to brighten up your home (and your day).

Bakancsos market is also unique in offering technical facilities such as gadget repair and replacement; so if your laptop starts playing up while you're on holiday or you smashed your phone while dancing your heart out at Instant, you can have it fixed at the market for a reasonable price.

Like Gozsdu Market, Bakancsos runs all year round but only at the weekends, including Fridays. Unfortunately, the opening hours of the market are also short and sweet, from 6am and open only until the very early afternoon, so you have to be an early bird if you want to make it down there- which might be a problem for those of you who consider procuring your weekend lie-ins the greatest treasure of them all.

Alongside the shopping and technical services, there are plenty of food vendors set up at the market, so if you had to skip breakfast to make it down there or just start to feel peckish as you're browsing then you can grab something to munch on from one of the food stalls.

The only down side to this market is that it's a little way off the beaten track. You'll have to take a metro from Deak Ferenc station followed by a bus and a few minutes walking to get there.
