Powder Tower, Prague

This elaborate entrance to the Old Town is a must-visit for anybody who wants to see Prague’s most impressive Gothic architecture.

The Powder Tower gets its name from its original purpose: it was built in 1475 as a gunpowder store. While it has outlived its original purpose, it has become most famous for being the starting point of Czech royal coronations: kings would start their procession by entering the Old Town under the Powder Tower and then make their way over the Charles Bridge to Prague Castle.

Visitors can get a unique view of the Old Town from the tower’s viewing gallery, which is 44 metres up from ground level.
