Strahov Monastery, Prague

Strahov Monastery, in the valley between Prague Castle and Petrin Hill, offers visitors a chance to see a historical abbey, an expansive library and a unique brewery.

Strahov Monastery, a Premonstratensian abbey, has been an almost constantly active monastery - surviving fire, wars, and an anti-religious communist regime - since it was founded in 1143 by Jindřich Zdík, Bishop John of Prague, and Vladislaus II, Duke of Bohemia. The monastery complex was built up as it changed hands over the centuries, and now it sports a range of architectural styles, from the Classical library to the Romanesque basilica.

Alongside some great on-site restaurants and pubs - linked to the monastery brewery - visitors today can learn about the monastery through two separate tours: the Strahov Library tour and the Strahov Gallery tour. The library tour gives you a glimpse of the historic monastery library, but the gallery tour is definitely the highlight, allowing visitors to see murals and frescos the most decorated rooms of the monastery, as well as an exhibition on some precious, classic paintings.
