In the Open or in Stealth. The Unruly Presence of an Intimate Future, MACBA, Barcelona, 31 October 2018-17 March 2019

A new exhibition of thinkers as much as of artists. MACBA, Barcelona, 31 October 2018-17 March 2019

The theme of this exhibition is truly abstract: “the concept of a future in which multiple histories and geographies are placed in dialogue”.

Behind it is the Raqs Media Collective, an acclaimed group of artists, philosophers and curators whose works centre, among other things, on connections.

On display, then, are works exploring both connectedness as such, and relations between the people of Barcelona. This second component, called the Personae Project, showcases encounters with ordinary men and women in the street. Seeing these encounters, we reflect on our societies, how they function, and how we can make them better.

As you can easily imagine, this kind of exhibition needs to be seen to be understood, which makes it intriguing, and attractive to those who don’t usually get much out of walking around a gallery. It has as much to offer for those interested in Barcelona as those interested in social issues in general.

The MACBA is the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art. Opened in 1995, it seeks to document both modern art as a whole and its relationship to Barcelona.

The MACBA building is a fine example of new rationalist architecture, and well worth a visit in itself. Expect clean lines, light-filled spaces and geometrical patterns.
