Housed in a submarine base-turned-gallery, Medio Acqua brings together artists for an exploration of the sea.
By any measure, the Underwater Base is a peculiar gallery. During the Second World War it was a submarine base. It’s now home to “contemporary creation”.
In keeping with its maritime past, the Underwater Base is hosting Medio Acqua, an exhibition of twenty artists from across generations and across the world, all working around the theme of the ocean.
“Medio Acqua” translates as “between the seas”, and was the old Roman name given to this part of France. The name survives in the region’s current name of Medoc.
Your path through the museum will immerse you (metaphorically) in water, through works which explore it in all its guises and all its physical states, from snow and frost to mist and fog. Some works explore water for its own sake, while others infuse it with political messages.
Included is a selection of video works by recent graduates of the Fresnoy School, a prestigious art academy in the northern French city of Tourcoing.
Bordeaux’s art scene has gone a bit mad for water lately. Complement Medio Acqua with a visit to Under the Sea, an exhibition on ocean wildlife taking place at the city’s brand new Maritime Museum.
