Hip-Hop. A Golden Age, MAC, Marseille: 26 September 2018-24 February 2019

Twenty works by futuristic artist Julien Prévieux go on display, at Marseille’s centre of contemporary art.

Julien Prévieux (b. 1974) is fascinated with modern information technology. On the one hand is data: ephemeral and ungraspable. On the other hand are data’s very concrete vessels: cables, computers, and so on. Hip Hop: A Golden Age seeks to express this contradiction at the heart of modern tech through art.

Building on the artist’s famous Letters of Non-Motivation, the exhibition offers several works that will stick in your mind long after you’ve left the MAC. For one, a series of photographs taken not by hand, but by a machine-learning system. Another work contains a graphic language, devised to communicate with monkeys.

The structure of the exhibition aims to echo our new informational environment. Modern society is characterized by flows of energy and information, but also by codes and a whole plethora of different spaces to live and work in. Prévieux is working to make visible again the strange spaces through which we move, but which have become everyday for us.

Hip Hop: A Golden Age is part of the Festival Actoral, whose main events are taking place over three weeks this autumn. Have a look at the festival website for other intriguing exhibitions on the agenda for late 2018 and early 2019.
