The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines is a unique souvenir shop in the heart of Rossio, Lisbon.

Opened in 2016, this colourful souvenir shop combines traditional Portuguese culture and a playful atmosphere to create a vibrant and unmissable experience for the Lisbon tourist. Sitting on the corner of Rossio Square, the shop front's bright window display invites you to take a look inside, where you will find colour co-ordinated tins of sardines stacked up to the ceiling.

The tins of sardines around the room are organised by date, with those on the left of the store showing the date from 100 years ago up until those on the very right showing the date of the current year. On each tin, there is a fact about the relevant year and a few names of famous people who were born on the date. Each year corresponds to a different colour of tin, resulting in a dramatic colourful wave around the store.

You will find the soundtrack, which was specially created for the shop by Carlos Alberto Moniz, to perfectly echo the fun style of the Fantastic World, where you can see a motorised carousel, a throne adorned with golden sardines and employees in costume who will happily tell you about the shop's interesting history.

A tin of sardines will set you back around €7, but there are other items available to purchase, and it's worth spending a few moments away from the city hustle and bustle to lose yourself in this amusing space.
