The Albertina is hosting a comprehensive monographic exhibition of the Austrian photographer Manfred Willmann.
Willmann, who was editor of the magazine “Camera Austria”, is best known for his series of everyday scenes from his hometown of Graz and rural southern Styria, breaking away from idyllic representations of rural life in Austria and eluding, at the same time, ideological appropriations.
Willmann uses visual strategies that give his photographs a uniqueness and very personal touch that have made him one of the most important photo artists in Europe. He achieves this through the consistent use of a powerful flashlight, highly saturated colours, and a focus on mundane image details.
The exhibition comprises six extensive groups of works - including the influential Schwarz und Gold and Das Land - in which Willmann's very direct and subjective point of view is manifested. The photographs can be both as works of autobiographical introspection as well as a study of social structures in the rural areas they portray.
