Picasso and the War, Exhibition, Army Museum, Paris: 5 April-28 July 2019

Everybody knows Picasso, but the Army Museum invites you discover a brand new facet of the artist, often unknown to the general public, through the exhibition entitled "Picasso and the War".

From the Spanish War, to the Spanish-American War, to the Vietnam War, the exhibition highlights how these wars influenced and nourished his work.

Having lived through the wars of the 20th century as a civilian, creating and painting was a kind of release: his political positions made him an activist, resistant and committed artist, and gave him an important and unprecedented role during his time. His pacifism puts him in line with the struggles of the communist parties. And in this context, a few years after the war, the famous symbol of the "Dove of Peace" was born.

Chronological and chrono-thematic, the exhibition will highlight some of the painter's little-known paintings, but will also provide an opportunity to discover the painter's unpublished personal archives, press articles and even personal objects.

This is the perfect opportunity to discover the different ways in which these themes have influenced and nourished Picasso's artistic work. Guernica provides one of the best examples. It was painted in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque town, by the Nazis and Itay, at the request of the Spanish nationalists and is one of the landmarks and pivotal points in Picasso’s life.
