Provence’s first ‘kitty café’, the Compagnie des Chats, is a wonderful place to spend a quiet afternoon or evening in Avignon.

The concept comes from the Japanese ‘Neko Cafés’ and has spread rapidly across the globe, bringing cat-lovers together in a fun and calming environment. The common belief is that spending quality time with cats in a relaxed atmosphere, like a café, helps the body to increase production of serotonin, leaving you feeling happy and relaxed.

Since May 2016, the owners of the Compagnie des Chats have applied this belief to create a haven for the cats and visitors alike, with cat-themed decorations and art; steps built onto the walls for the cats to explore; and baskets with toys so you can play and interact with the kitties.

Though the cats may be the main selling point for many people, the menu at the Compagnie des Chats should not be overlooked. Serving homemade traditional tartines, charcuterie boards, luxurious desserts and even local wines, there is something for every occasion; and the bar opens at both lunch and dinner time, allowing you to decide what kind of atmosphere you’d prefer.

As you dine, you will surely be visited by some of the friendly resident cats, and you will be able to read up about them on cards dotted around which explains their personal stories and personalities. If you fall in love with one of them in particular, the café is in partnership with the Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and aims to help all the cats be rehomed. If you go on to adopt one of them, your photo with your new family member will be added to the hundreds already on the wall near the entrance as a reminder of your special story!
