Prehistory and modernity?

When Prehistory and modern art meet… A crazy mix that Centre Pompidou highlights with an exhibition, Préhistoire, une invention moderne, this retrospective reveals the fertile relationship uniting prehistory and contemporary and modern art through works by artists such as Picasso, Miró, Giacometti, Penone, Ernst, Klein, Klee, Cezanne, Dubuffet and many others.

Composed in the 18th century, the notion of Prehistory is resolutely modern, both a historic, anthropologic and artistic concept. A notion that gets even stronger in the early 20th century with the specific recognition of cave painting, an art which became a fascinating object as much as a model for various modern art experiments.

The exhibition shines a light on how artists and society are attracted to prehistoric art and its “fantasied origins”. Completing a chronological tour, you will follow  the evolution of this art from the 20th century until today. This is a unique opportunity creating a dialogue between modern works and iconic pieces coming from Paleolithic and Neolithic.
