Venetian Carnival, Pérouges

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

The first weekend in April, almost 50 Venetian masks appear in small medieval city Pérouges, just 30 minutes from Lyon.

This annual Venetian carnival is a tradition, especially for the locals. They prepare their masks for almost a year in the lead up to the event.

During most of the year, Pérouges is a peaceful medieval village just with a few habitants. However, the first weekend of April is different. Large crowds gather here to see the Venetian masks.

You can find almost 50 masks displayed. The masks are magnificent. Each of them represents a human character - envy, goodness, passion, etc. What they represent depends on your imagination.

The parade starts behind the church of Pérouges and after the welcoming ceremony the masks are walked through the village where you can easily take a picture with them.

You definitely cannot miss this carnival.
