Palazzo Reale, Milan

This former royal residence witnessed the debut of Mozart’s opera Ascanio in Alba, commissioned by the Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa in 1771 for the wedding of her son, the Archduke Ferdinand, and performed in the Teatro Regio Ducal (Royal Ducal Theatre) in the palace.

The city’s seat of government for many centuries, today you’ll find art exhibitions within the palace’s walls (in the past this has included Monet and Picasso), and whilst the building itself has been restored and remodelled a lot over the years, you can still admire the original neoclassical façade built by the Archduke in the late 18th-century.
