Greco, Grand Palais, Paris: 16 October 2019-10 February 2020

This retrospective is the first major exhibition ever dedicated to El Greco in France.

Doménikos Theotokópoulos, most widely known as El Greco, was born in 1541 in Crete, though he worked as a  painter in Italy and Spain. Attracted by the promises of the El Escorial, the artist brought Titian's colour, Tintoretto's daring and Michelangelo's plasticity to the peninsula, and he earned a special place in the history of painting: the last great master of the Renaissance.

Having been rediscovered in the late 19th century, El Greco was admired and became a source of inspiration for the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, including Fauvism, Mannerism, Cubism, Expressionism and abstraction.

El Greco was also an insatiable creator of form and shape, developing innovative and daring compositions that were recurrent throughout his works, albeit varying the effects, the plastic means and the intentions of what his painting convey.

This comprehensive retrospective, organised in cooperation with the Art Institute of Chicago,  sheds new light on the artist, his time and his work.
