Autumn 2019 marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death (1669). The Dulwich Picture Gallery is celebrating it with Rembrandt’s Light, a major exhibition which brings together 35 of his best works thereby exploring the artist’s mastery of light.

The Dutch master is well known for his visual storytelling and his mastery of light, both of which are highlighted in the exhibition which, arranged thematically, traces the artist's skillful use of light and shadow to dramatic effect: from evoking moods in religious and mythological stories (see Christ and St Mary Magdalene at the Tomb, 1638) to conveying motion (The Denial of St Peter, 1660, The Woman Taken in Adultery, 1644) and depicting raw human emotion in his subjects (Girl at a Window, 1645, A Woman in Bed, c. 1645-6 and A Woman Bathing in a Stream, 1654 )

The use of light is not only essential to the works themselves but it also plays a  part in the visitors' experience. Thanks to carefully constructed lighting provided by Peter Suschitzky, cinematographer of The Empire Strikes Back, the exhibition spaces reflect the wide scope of Rembrandt’s work, from the highly theatrical to the spiritual.

The exhibition features major international loans such as The Pilgrims at Emmaus, 1648 from the  Musée du Louvre, Philemon and Baucis, 1658 which travels for the very first time to the UK from the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, Tobit and Anna with the Kid, 1645, and The Dream of Joseph, 1645, on loan from the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
