The New World of Charlotte Perriand, Exhibition, Vuitton Foundation, Paris: 2 October 2019-24 February 2020

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

It is astonishing that Charlotte Perriand is not better known. This outstanding exhibition, 20 years after death shows the extraordinarily modern furniture which she designed as well as a  mindblowing
selection  of work of her friends and contemporaries, notably Corbusier, Leger, Picasso...

A close friend and collaborator of Corbusier, French designer Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) could be best described as a free woman, pioneer and one of the top figures of  20th-century design. Her work has taken over the entire exhibition space of the Fondation.

The mammoth  exhibition which occupies four floors commemorates Perriand's work and vision as an interior architect, exploring the links between architecture, art and design - a sort of “synthesis of the arts”. It features furniture, jewelry, drawings and interiors, providing a comprehensive sample of her work.

It also has an extraordinary number of outstanding works from friends and contemporaries. The paintings include many pieces by Corbusier, which even the dubious disciples of his architectural work, cannot fail to love.

Don't miss her revolutionary furniture pieces, such as  the ubiquitous Swivel Armchair (1927),  the bent plywood stacking Ombre Chair (1954) and reconstructions of spaces and structures as well the Tea House for the Cultural Festival of Japan in Paris (1993) which is installed on the top floor in our society: an object of delight, it is also the spearhead of tomorrow's societal transformations.
