Ceija Stojka, Exhibition, Reina Sofía, Madrid: 22 November 2019-23 March 2020

The Reina Sofía Museum hosts the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the Austrian painter Ceija Stojka.

Ceija Stojka (1933-2013), was born in Austria. She came from a family of "Roms" (gypsies) and as a result was deported at the age of 10, with her mother and other members of her family, but having survived three concentration camps (Auschwitz-Birkenau, Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen), she lived to tell her tale.

It was only 40 years later, when she was 55 that her thoughts returned to this terrible period of her life, during which over 150,000 Roms were executed by the Nazis.  She wrote several books in a very personal and poetic style, and started painting and drawing.
