In July 2018, a new space opens its doors in the heart of the Fort Saint-jean: the Galerie des Officiers invites you for a visual wander through the history of this Marseillais fortress.
From the foundation of Massalia to the opening of the Mucem, this journey is an opportunity to see and better understand the site of the Fort Saint-Jean, whose history is intrinsically linked to that of Marseille and the Mediterranean basin.
Today, the Fort Saint-Jean is made up of interlinked constructions from centuries past: a site from Antiquity chosen by Phoenician sailors, two elevated towers at the entrance of the port, the headquarters of Knights Templar attached to the rock, the vestiges of a church, a rise for cannons, vaulted passageways, barrack buildings for the Foreign Legion ... A veritable architectural cornucopia that will be deconstructed through films, mockups and interactive elements, all presented throughout the rooms of the Galeries des Officiers.
This five-stage chronological journey is enriched with a virtual trip of the towers of Fanal and of King René, as well as a panorama of artistic presentations of the fort from across the centuries. The visit ends in the bowels of the fort, with an immersion into the "couloir du temps" (corridor of time) to discover the final secrets of this listed monument.
