Jim Dine, Exhibition, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome: 11 February-26 July 2020

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

This large anthological exhibition, created in close collaboration with the artist and curated by Daniela Lancioni, senior curator of the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo will be at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in 2020.

The Palazzo delle Esposizioni presents one of the major protagonists of American art, whose radical and innovative work had a great impact on contemporary visual culture, in particular on the Italian culture of the Sixties.

Despite his popularity, Jim Dine remains an artist that is difficult to categorise on account of his desire for independence and his refusal to identify with established categories of criticism, art history and the market. The autonomy and freedom is demonstrated by his biographical events and the fact that he tenaciously adheres his works to lived experiences, sometimes defines as "uneducated" and "disturbing".

The exhibition features over 60 works, dated from 1959 to 2016, borrowed for the occasion from public and private collections in Europe and the USA, mainly from the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, to which Dine himself donated a generous number of works. Some of his masterpieces will be present -Window with an Axe (1961), Black Shovel (1962), Four Rooms (1962) and Two Palettes in Black with Stovepipe (Dream) (1963). Additionally, an exhaustive iconographic apparatus will return the visual memory of famous happenings narrated by the voice of Jim Dine himself. There is an area dedicated to his sculptures, and a selection of video interviews that will familiarise you with the artist.
