Jamais, Óscar Domínguez Pablo Picasso, Exhibition, Picasso Museum, Barcelona: 15 July-8 November 2020

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

The exhibition arises from "Jamais", the famous object of the surrealist artist Óscar Domínguez, dating from 1938.

The work consists of a phonograph, muted and painted white, whose plate is represented by an abdomen that rotates under a hand that acts as a needle while the legs of a woman come out of the amplifier.

After being presented at the Galerie Gradiva by André Breton in Paris, Jamaisse showed at the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme, organized by André Breton and Paul Eluard at the Galerie Beaux-Arts, also in Paris, in 1938. The exhibition, the largest ever Organized by the Surrealists, had a great impact and became an event markedly symbolic on the eve of the Second World War. It featured key pieces of surrealism, such as the ride of the Domínguez mannequins, Dalí's rainy cab or the roof made up of sacks of charcoal from Duchamp, among others. Picasso participated with some paintings as well.

Jamais was considered missing until last year, on the occasion of the preparations for the Picasso exhibition "The Gaze of the Photographer," the finding of unpublished photographs of Nick de Morgoli from a private collection gave new clues about its whereabouts. This is a series of images in which Picasso is observed with the Jamais object in his Parisian workshop in Rue des Grands-Augustins. Thanks to that casual discovery, it has been known that Dominguez gave this piece to Picassos a token of their friendship.

The exhibition will show, in addition to the photographs of Morgoli, a series of images of the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme as well as the object 'Jamais', which has been restored for the occasion
by our head restorer after almost a century without having been exposed.
