La BD de A à Z, Exhibition, Mucem, Marseille: 14 October 2020-8 March 2021

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

This exhibition celebrates the history of comic books in France and the role they have played in french society.

Although superheroes might be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of comic books, this exhibition shows that comics have served a number of different purposes since they were first made at the beginning of the 20th-century. Comics, for example, haven’t always been just for your entertainment, and you’ll see that some of the very earliest comics were used to promote products such as soap or toys. Comic books have also had a variety of different styles, and whilst you may associate comics with cartoons, the authors of some comics, especially during the 50s and 60s, tried to make their drawings as realistic as possible. Many comic books have a political message and you’ll notice that comics have often been influenced by the era in which they were written.

The Mucem will guide you through its huge collection of comic books, giving you the chance to see how comics have changed over the last 120 years.
