During this early 20th-century movement, artists stopped painting physical reality and instead started using a variety of techniques to reflect feelings and ideas.

The movement was kicked off by four students at the Technical University of Dresden as they started using vivid colour and bold images to portray intense emotion. You’ll notice that Erich Heckel’s 1908 painting ‘The White House’, for example, uses thick brush strokes and many different colours, breaking away from the realistic paintings of the 19th-century. Although German Expressionists began by painting scenes from urban life, they soon started painting nude portraits which you’ll also be able to see. Many members of the movement were also interested in primitivism and used their paintings to reflect individual freedom and natural experiences. The paintings at this exhibition are placed in chronological order so you can see how expressionism changed over time and how the public reacted to the movement.
