This commission is  Anicka Yi’s largest and most ambitious project yet. It will be displayed in the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall from the 12th October 2021 – 16th January 2022, in partnership with Hyundai Motor.

Yi’s work explores the links between science and art and is known for the way in which her works activate and engage with different senses. She has achieved this in the past by experimenting with unorthodox materials, which have ranged from tempura batter to kombucha leather. Drawing on and addressing contemporary questions about gender, migration and class, Yi utilizes the research of philosophers who focus on emerging forms of life and intelligence, adding depth and complexities to her work.

Some of her previous work were included in the  2019 Venice Biennale, Yi created giant pods made of kelp and filled with animatronic insects, as well as panels of soil through which an artificial intelligence controlled the environment of the living organisms. Her other projects have been a fragrance combining the chemical compounds from humans and ants, as well as a display of metal pins corroding in ultrasonic gel. Her work is renowned for being highly experimental and cross-disciplinary as it engages with questions we face today regarding humanity’s relationship to nature and technology.
