The Human Image: Art, Identities and Symbolism, Exhibition, CaixaForum Madrid: 29 April-29 August 2021

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

This temporary exhibition is a collection of works from different eras, geographies and styles to examine how the human being portrays itself.

It offers a complex journey through the themes and symbolic concepts that  civilisations throughout time have shared, reflecting on human creations and representations in both history and art.

The gallery is displaying pieces from the British Museum, contemporary art from the Calxa Foundation Collection and some major loans from other institutions such as the Prado Museum. The extensive array of pieces within this exhibition see ancient communities next to works from the present day, forming direct comparisons between forms, ideas and interpretations of the human figure.

You are taken back in time to prehistory, seeing a skull, for example, which was modelled 11,000 years ago, and brought forward again to the present day with audiovisual compositions.
