American Art from Thyssen Collection, Exhibition, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid: 14 December 2021-26 June 2022

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

This re-installation includes around 170 works of American art displayed on the ground floor galleries of the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum.

Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza began collecting American art actively in the early 1970s, accumulating an extensive collection of American painting, which is now considered an important reference point of study within the European context.

He had a particular interest in 19th-century landscape painting, many of which are displayed in the exhibition. There will also be works from the museum’s permanent collection, the Carmen Thyssen collection and the Thyssen family collection, organised thematically according to categories such as religion, politics, the environments, popular culture and urban life, to offer a greater understanding of American art and culture.
