Johann Jakob Hartmann: In-Sight, Exhibition, Belvedere Museum, Vienna: 9 February-29 August 2021

The Belvedere Museum is dedicating an exhibition to this artist in its IN-SIGHT series, which is a series of exhibitions held three times a year.

The Belvedere Museum's new exhibition focuses on six of his works from the museum's collection, including his series representing the elements of earth, fire, water and air. Remarkable in many respects, it is a rare example of a complete set that has survived to the present day, since throughout history comparable series have often been separated when they changed ownership. 

Johann Jakob Hartmann dealt with various themes and genres in his different works, but he is best known for his forest landscapes, which are filled with extraordinary detail and a host of figures and animals.

Hartmann's series entered the Belvedere Museum's collection in the twentieth century, four of the six works had already been exhibited in the Imperial Gallery at the end of the eighteenth century. Thanks to a recent restoration by the Belvedere Museum's conservation workshop, the six works can now be seen together and will be presented in an IN-SIGHT exhibition devoted to the artist's life and work.
