The Albertina museum will honour Amedeo Modigliani with a major retrospective to mark the one hundredth anniversary of his death.
Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is one of those artists who forged a distinct style, yet refused to be labelled. For the first time, the exhibition will show Modigliani not as a bohemian under the influence of alcohol and drugs, nor as a pleasant portraitist and Art Deco pioneer, but as a major artist of the avant-garde who carried the revolution of Primitivism far into the twentieth century.
Modigliani will make his first appearance in Austria with his famous nudes and outstanding portraits, as well as his sculptures, which are rarely found in European museums. The exhibition will bring together works from major public museums as well as the most important private collection from places between America and Asia.
Particular attention will be paid to the artist's lifelong exploration of the art of primitivism. Modigliani's oeuvre will thus be juxtaposed with key works characteristic of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncuşi, André Derain, as well as objects from so-called "primitive" civilisations such as prehistory, archaeology and non-European.
