Giralda, Seville

The Giralda is the minaret of the great Almohad mosque of Seville and one of the most important monuments of Hispano-Muslim architecture. 

Near the Plaza del Triunfo and the Hospice de los Venerables of Seville, stands the Giralda. The minaret of the great Almohad mosque of Seville. After the Reconquista, in 1492, the mosque was converted into a cathedral and the Giralda became the bell tower of the cathedral. It is one of the most important monuments of Hispano-Muslim architecture and the most emblematic monument of the city of Seville and  of Andalusia. Its construction began in 1184 under the order of Abu Yacoub Yusuf, and at the time it was the highest tower in the world at 97.5 metres. On 29 December 1928 it was declared a National Heritage Site and in 1987 it was included in the World Heritage List.
