Golden Tower, Seville

The Golden Tower (Torre del Oro) is a military observation tower of the city of Seville.

On the left bank of the Guadalquivir stands the Golden Tower, a military observation tower of the city.

It was built in the 13th-century by the Almoravids and Almohads to control access to the city from the Guadalquivir. The Gold Tower is part of the fortifications built around the historic centre and the Alcazar of Seville. According to legend, its name comes from the fact that the gold brought back from America in the 16th-century was kept there, but also from the golden reflections of the Tower.

A thousand curious stories, legends and hoaxes have circulated about this elegant dodecagonal tower. The first is that of its construction itself, which spans five centuries and reflects three different periods in the history of Seville.
