The Statue of Victor Emmanuel II, Verona

If you are interested in monuments and/or Italian history, one of the statues that you should visit is the statue of Vittorio Emanuele II.

You can find the statue of the Italian king in the Piazza Bra, or more precisely, in the park called Giardino, right next to the Arena di Verona. Victor Emmanuel II is mainly known as the former King of Sardinia who later, and until his death in 1878, was a King of Italy. Victor Emmanuel is glorified in Italy for various reasons. Firstly, he took part in the Italian unification by fighting in the First Italian War of Independence which took place in 1848-1849. Subsequently, and following his father’s abdication, Victor Emmanuel became the king of Piedmont-Sardinia in 1849. Later on, he managed to ally himself with Napoleon III which led to the support of France in the Second War of Independence which happened in the year 1859. The aforementioned war resulted in Lombardy’s liberty from Austrian power. Lastly, the title of the King of Italy came to Victor Emmanuel on 17 March 1861 when Giuseppe Garibaldi at Teano forwarded the control of southern Italy.

The statue of Victor Emmanuel II, often referred to as Padre della Patria (the father of the homeland), was erected on 9 January 1883 in Verona. The sculptor of the statue, Ambrogio Borghi, was able to build the monument after winning the contest which took place in 1880. You can visit the monument at any time as it is located in a public square.
