Verona Arena

The Roman Amphitheatre which was built at the beginning of the 1st century is one of the largest in Italy.  With space for up to 30000, people travelled huge distances to see gladiators fighting. Today it is famous as a venue for classical music, especially the Verona Opera Festival in summer.

The round facade of the Arena was originally composed of three rings of pink and white limestone arches, but at the beginning of the 12th-century it was severely ruined and parts of the stones were stolen. So today you can see only the inner and some parts of the outer ring.

In 1913 the amphitheatre staged the opera Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth. Since then Arena di Verona stages famous operas and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.
