Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Istanbul

The Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate has been the spiritual centre of the Greek Orthodox world since around 1600.

Officially the seat of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, it is considered the Vatican of the Eastern Orthodox church. Together with the  18th century Aya Yorgi Kilisesi, Istanbul (Church of St. George, Istanbul), which stands in the grounds, they attract coach loads of pilgrims from Greece for Sunday mass, particularly at Easter time.

It is ornately gilded inside and contains many holy relics, mosaics, and sculptures.

Every year on January 6 (Epiphany), the patriarch throws a wooden cross into the cold waters of Haliç (the Golden Horn), and men compete to reach it first. Make sure you get a place close to the river to witness this holy tradition.
