Palazzo Maffei, Verona

The only Baroque palace in Verona, with its exquisite architectural style and the sculpture of the Venetian Lion right in front of it, Palazzo Maffei is right on Piazza delle Erbe.

In the past, it belonged to a powerful Maffei family and is now an important art museum.

Palazzo Maffei housed the collection of  Veronese entrepreneur Luigi Carlon and it includes about 600 artworks such as paintings, furniture, sculptures, and ancient books. The idea of the museum is to create a dialogue between ancient and modern art and to demonstrate that throughout history, artists sought to represent the same concepts through different forms and ways. In every room, you will feel this strong connection and see how works from different periods and styles are combined: a 14th-century triptych next to “Concetto spaziale. Attese” by Lucio Fontana (1964-1965), etc.

The museum is divided into two floors: the first floor includes 18 thematic rooms in which pieces of modern art are juxtaposed with groups of classical works. There is also a section dedicated to the 20th century which includes works of famous artists such as Picasso, Boccioni, Severini, De Chirico, Magritte, Manzoni, and many others.

The exhibition on the second floor invites you to reflect on such themes as man and cosmos, nature and infinity, and the role of history. The works of such artists as Dynys, Mattiacci, Roosegarde, and Canova will set you thinking.

At the end of your tour, don’t forget to go up to the terrace of Palazzo Maffei to enjoy one of the best views of Verona.
