David Hockney: Drawing from Life, Exhibition, National Portrait Gallery, London: 2 November 2023 – 21 January 2024

Renowned as one of the most exceptional draftsmen in history and a staunch advocate of the craft, David Hockney's unwavering dedication to drawing has endured throughout his illustrious career.

This exhibition delves into the vast body of the artist's work spanning six decades, focusing on his deeply personal portrayals of five individuals: his mother, Celia Birtwell, Gregory Evans, Maurice Payne, and the artist himself.

Hockney's profound familiarity with his subjects allows  him to employ an array of mediums and styles, ranging from traditional tools like pencil, pen and ink, and crayon, to innovative techniques such as photographic collage and digital creations using the iPad.

Additionally, the exhibition unveils an  assortment of new portraits capturing the essence of Hockney's friends and visitors to his studio in Normandy, a series that was realised between 2020 and 2022.
