The Albertina is showcasing the second part of a trilogy about the history of printmaking, titled "From Andy Warhol to Damien Hirst - The Revolution in Printmaking".
This exhibition, held at the Albertina Modern, is a unique presentation as it features prints from after 1960, which differ significantly from those created in the previous five centuries. The Albertina's collection of prints reflects the international development of art with examples from various art movements.
This revolution in printmaking is defined by three criteria. The first is the principle of seriality, exemplified by artists such as Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, and Kiki Smith. The second is the monumentalization of great works by artists like Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. Lastly, screen printing is highlighted as a new technique that brings a sense of reality to the images.
