Church of Panagia Chalkeon, Thessaloniki

The Church of Panagia Chalkeon is a well-preserved Byzantine church located in Thessaloniki, dating back to the 11th century.

The Church of Panagia Chalkeon also known as Our Lady of the Coppersmiths was built in 1028, according to a marble inscription on the western entrance. Its name probably  comes from the coppersmiths’ workshop that could be found close by  at the time.

Building this church was rather expensive at the time as it was exclusively built in brick.

This Church, like many in town, is typical of  Constantinople style, with successive carved arches, conches and semi-circular columns on the outside of the Church. It was also converted into a mosque by the Ottomans in 1430, and stayed as such until 1912.
