Latomos Monastery - Holy Church of Hosios David, Thessaloniki

The Latomos Monastery is a historic monastery complex renowned for its impressive Byzantine architecture and unique religious significance.

The Church of Hosios David, also known as Latomos Monastery was built in the late 5th-century. It is embellished with rich mosaic and fresco decorations that were restored between the 12th and 14th centuries.

Like most other churches in Thessaloniki, the church of Hosios David was converted into a mosque under Ottoman rule before being reconsecrated in 1921.

In the middle of the Byzantine period, the building was damaged by earthquakes. Some of the structure collapsed including the triple arch (tribelon). It is also during that period that marbling and other fresco paintings were added to the church.

Don’t miss the frescoes depicting scenes such as the nativity, presentation in the temple, our lady of the passion, Christ on the mount of olives, the entry into Jerusalem, theophany, and decorative panels resembling marble slabs. The church's frescos are unique for their lack of borders between different scenes. Most of the frescoes were created during the middle Byzantine period, with others added during the Palaeologan period around 1300.  The  frescoes have survived  earthquakes and water damage, and the plaster used to cover them during Turkish rule (1430-1912).
