This neoclassical arch was designed by Vanvittelli in honour of Pope Clement XII (1730-1740) whose statue was later placed in the Piazza del Plebiscito, and was originally to stand above the attic (the decoration of the topmost part of the arch).
Work was resumed by architect Filippo Marchionni, commissioned by Pope Benedict XIV (1714-1758 ), completing the new pier of the port of Ancona. The side facing the sea is made of Istrian stone and the side facing the town is built of simple bricks.
