Named after the national hero who briefly ensured Albania was independent of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, Skanderbeg Square is more or less the centre and the heart of the city.
There is a large bronze statue of Skanderbeg on horseback in the middle of the square, and the Et'hem Bey Mosque, one of the nation's most treasured buildings that dates back to the late 18th century, is in the southeast corner. You will also see the nation's major museums, including The National Historic Museum which has a huge communist era mural of victorious partisans.
