Santa Ana Square, Madrid

Surrounded by theatres, cafes, restaurants and music, Plaza de Santa Ana is bursting with life.

Rather fittingly, it’s in the Barrio de las Letras (Madrid’s literary quarter), where some of Spain’s greatest writers once lived. Today, two statues, one of 17th century writer Calderón de la Barca and the other of Spanish playwright and poet Federíco García Lorca, remind you of the history of the plaza. Besides these great literary figures, the square is also home to the Teatro Español (Spanish Theatre) and a number of lively cafes, restaurants and bars.
