The Hungarian State Opera House

Also called the Budapest Opera House, the Hungarian State Opera House is one of the best in the world. Whether you’re a classical music fan or just want some good architecture, this imposing hall is worth a look.

“Renaissance Revival” refers to a type of architecture popular in the 19th century. It drew on classical Italian buildings as well as Gothic ones, such as cathedrals. The Hungarian State Opera House is an example of Renaissance Revival. Huge fronts, pillars and arches make it an impressive sight, inside and out.

If you do see an opera here, you’ll do so safe in the knowledge that the acoustics are some of the best in the world. Only the Milan Scala and Paris Opera House rank better. In fact, the house has been one of the global centres of classical music. The first director, Ferenc Erkel, wrote the Hungarian national anthem. Classical music giant Gustav Mahler was also director here. Outside you’ll find a statue of another: Ferenc Liszt.

If opera’s not your thing, you can still take a daytime tour of this magnificent space. As impressive as the giant frame is the detailed artwork on the wood and marble. Some parts have been renovated to great effect. And if the tour has converted you to opera, you can pay to see a mini-performance afterwards.

The performances vary in quality, according to past visitors. Hungary’s best musicians are often abroad on tour, so you won’t always get to see them. In general, however, standards are high.

(Beware that the air-conditioning isn’t always on in summer, so this isn’t the place to go if you’re easily hot and bothered).
