But a Storm is Blowing From Paradise: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa, GAM, April 11- June 17 2018

This is archived material. It is for reference purposes only.

You may be in Milan, but this exhibition has the distinct flavour of the Middle East and North Africa. The Guggenheim UBS MAP Fund has gathered artists such as Linda Abdul,  Abbas Akhavan, and Kader Attia, for a big collaborative exhibition.

Featuring works from 13 artists, themes such as immigration, colonisation and modernisation are examined. At first sight, the artists seem to be tied together by their common geographical regions, but their works are diverse and reflect their individual focuses. A version of this exhibition was presented at the Guggenheim in New York, and has now come to the GAM in Milan.

Even with their differences come similarities, for example the topic of war. Artists Lida Abdul and Joana Hadjithomas and Khalili Joreige deal with its after effects in their works. In Abdul’s case the focus is on human devastation and for Hadjithomas and Joreige it is the loss of archival and cultural material. They show it in different ways, but we can see thematic overlaps. Although these works were brought together for their link with the Middle East and North Africa, they deal with issues relevant to us all today.
