Marina Abramović, Palazzo Strozzi, 21 September 2018-20 January 2019

Presenting Marina Abramovic, the “Grandmother of performance art” who pushes her body to the limits for the sake of her work. Her life’s performances and pieces can be seen in a retrospective exhibition at the Palazzo Strozzi.

A woman who nearly died during one of her performances, a woman who walked 12,500km for a break-up. Her personal advice is never to do things half-heartedly, to put yourself 100% into anything you do. She certainly practises what she preaches, pouring her body and soul to her audiences and not being afraid to expose even dark topics such as self-harm and violence. Naturally this approach has attracted controversy over the years: after her performance of Rhythm 0, she was even told she should be locked up in a mental asylum. However, her performance is all a way of interacting with the public to create a long-lasting impression.

This exhibition is a retrospective look at her career and features works ranging from the 1970s to works produced in the last decade. You can see an overview of her most famous pieces accompanied by live performances. If you want a change from the usual, immobile exhibitions then performance art could be for you.
