This Florentine fountain was brought to Palermo in 1573 and was given a place on Pretoria Square.
The people of Palermo associated the fountain with corruption because of its 50 nude statues which depict different animals, monsters and mythical creatures. This includes statues of Venus, Adonis, Hercules, Apollo, Diana and Pomona. Sicilian churchgoers branded the fountain the Fountain of Shame. Amongst locals, the fountain has retained this name.
